Pink eyes are often noticed with the inflammation of the conjunctiva which is a clear membrane covering white part of the eye. With the inflammation of the conjunctiva, the eyes turn red and patient start getting more irritated.
There could be many reasons of Pink eye. One common reason is the presence of foreign objects in the eye lids. With the white part of the eye gets in contact with dust or foreign bodies, then the infected eyes start experiencing itchiness and turn red. The situation gets worsened if the individual suffers from any allergy for that particular foreign object. This is a common reason of pink eyes and can easily be treated by removing the foreign objects carefully from the eyes. Another reason for the pink eyes is the viral and bacterial infection. Viral infection can cause red, inflamed eye. They are mainly caused by adenovirus. In case of viral infection, watery discharge and cold like symptoms like running nose and sinus congestion are observed. The eyelids are swollen and sighting at lights is very painful. Another type is bacterial eye infection. Bacterial eye infection could result from staphylococci and streptococci bacteria. This is the real cause of conjunctivitis and the infected individual may experience pain in the eyes, swelling, redness and a yellow and greenish discharge form the eyes. Symptoms like cough, runny nose are also experienced. This type of infection has to be referred to a doctor who may prescribe an antibiotic for the treatment of the eyes.
The bacterial infection is very contagious and could spread from person to person very easily. This is the reason that it is spreads more commonly among the children. There is only one way to avoid this type of infection, i.e. by proper prevention. During the days of conjunctivitis, avoid direct contact with the public and use clean washcloths.
