Retinoschisis - Causes, Symptoms and Cure

Retinoschisis can be termed as an eye disease which can be characterized by abnormal splitting of the retina's neurosensory layers. If left unattended it can result in vision loss. Though Retinoschisis can be termed as a form of macular degeneration, it can be further divided into four types.

  • Degenerative Retinoschisis – Though it is not a genetically inherited condition, Degenerative Retinoschisis is often confused with Retinal Detachment and should be attended by an expert eye doctor. It has been found in upto 7% of normal human beings.
  • Hereditary Retinoschisis - This is a less common disease and is believed to occur one in every 5,000 to 25,000 individuals. As the name suggests it is an inherited disease often inherited by men from their unaffected carrier mothers. It is believed to be caused by an X-linked genetic defect, affecting the vision of men. However, very few men are said to go blind due to this disease. Hereditary Retinoschisis causes tiny cysts in the retina which can be detected by an expert.
  • Tractional Retinoschisis - This disease is said to cause traction on the retina especially at the macula.
  • Exudative Retinoschisis – It affects the central part of retina, secondary to optic disc pit. Exudative Retinoschisis is believed to cause substantial vision loss. Treatments like Laser Photocoagulations, Vitrectomy and Gas Injection are believed to be effective in this form of Retinoschisis.

Causes
Genetic birth defect is the only known cause of Retinoschisis.

Symptoms

  • Decreased vision
  • Loss of peripheral vision
  • Division of retina
  • Vision defect
  • Occurring disintegration of retina
  • Inability to see clearly in bright light.

Treatment

  • Someone who is nearsighted or farsighted can use spectacles to improve the overall quality of vision however this cannot repair the nerve tissue damage.
  • Even though Vitamin A is quite helpful in case of genetic retinal diseases but it has little effect on retinoschisis.
