Eyes are one of the most sensitive parts of the body which are responsible for one’s vision and thus, should be taken care of to prevent and slow down macular degeneration caused due to ageing. Eye care should be maintained regularly, which helps in enhanced lifespan of the eye, and, in reduced premature vision loss. It can be done through eye exercises and proper nutrition.
Nutrition is very essential for our body in general and eyes in particular. It helps the body to grow, repair, builds immunity, and protects against any infections and diseases. Thus, nutrition is very important for both the body and the eyes too.
Good nutrition is very essential for a healthy body and healthy eyes. Consuming a proper diet with vitamins and nutrients, go a long way in reducing the further risks of eye diseases. Some of the nutrients that help in securing eyecare can be referred to as:
- Antioxidants - They eliminate harmful radicals inside the body, which may damage the vision. Diet having more antioxidants helps in reducing the risk of eye disorders like cataract or AMD (age related macular degeneration). Fruits and vegetables, which are highly pigmented, are rich in antioxidants. Raw fruits and vegetables provide with more antioxidants than canned or cooked or frozen ones. Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E provide with maximum sources of antioxidants.
- Vitamin A – It is very important for the retina of the eyes. It helps in reducing the risk of night-blindness, AMD and cataracts. It helps in sensing the variation of the light and the darkness by the eye. It can be found in eggs, liver, carrots and spinach.
- Vitamin C- It contains antioxidants that help in reducing the risk of AMD and cataract. It can be found in citrus fruits, orange juice, green peppers, strawberries, broccoli, and sweet potatoes.
- Vitamin E- It is an important ingredient of antioxidants that helps in preventing the cataracts and delaying its growth. It can be found in nuts, green leafy vegetables, and fortified products.
- Minerals- that are most important for the eyes include selenium and zinc. They help the body to absorb the antioxidants easily. Food like cheese, red meat, pork, fortified cereals are rich in zinc. Selenium can be found in walnuts, enriched bread, rice, macaroni and cheese.
It is a well known fact that a balanced diet with healthy fruits and vegetables is, as good for the eyes as it is for the body. Thus, for a healthy eyecare, nutrition is a must, along with a regular check up of the eyes at least once in two years.
