Eye twitching, also called blepharospasm, is a condition marked by uncontrolled and rapid spasms or contractions of the eye lid. It usually occurs after a person has undergone extended periods of strain. It can include mental or physical stress, working at a computer for long and many more. Usually this condition alleviates itself but if it continues to persists, there is a need to consult an Eye Doctor.
Symptoms
The symptoms of eye twitching can be classified as:
- Ophthalmologic symptoms: It includes, blurred vision, discharge from eye, ptosis or drooping eye lid, eye pain, dry eyes, increased light sensitivity, eye infection, squinting, itchy eyes, watery or red eyes.
- Neurological symptoms: Facial tics, disruptive outbursts of gesture or speech, tremors and seizures, restlessness, garbled speech.
- Serious symptoms: Change in alertness or consciousness level, facial weakness, eye pain, facial paralysis, sudden change or loss of vision, sudden imbalance or loss of coordination, sudden and severe headache.
Causes
Eye twitching can most commonly be caused due to caffeine overuse, anxiety, dust, smoke, fatigue or stress. Other symptoms are:
- Ophthalmologic causes: conjunctivitis, corneal ulcer, blepharitis, allergy or infection in the eyes, dry eyes, primary congenital glaucoma.
- Neurological causes: attention deficit disorder (ADD), chronic motor tics, facial tic, Tourette’s syndrome, tardive dyskinesia, strokes.
- Serious causes: these include seizure disorder, stroke or Aicardi syndrome.
Treatment
There are some of the treatments that can cure eye twitching:
- Reduce caffeine intake: Excess intake of caffeine can cause eye twitching. It can also lead to various other problems like delirium, irregular heartbeat, headaches, sleep disturbances etc. thus, your caffeine intake should be limited.
- Get enough sleep: If you do not sleep well, apart from eye twitching you can also suffer from depression, heart disease, blurred speech and tremors.
- Avoid stress: Stress is a major cause of eye twitching. Take some time out from your work and relax your eyes.
