Eyes are an important part of our body which can sense vision and enable us to see this beautiful world. Thus, eyes should be taken care of on regular basis. Not only eye testing is necessary, for the fear of weak eyesight or vision loss, but the eye structure as a whole should also be noticed carefully if one is suffering from hyper thyroid.

Hyperthyroid, is not only related to the overactive thyroid glands, but they also affect the eyes if not noticed on time. It leads to Thyroid Eye Disease (TED), also known as Dysthyroid/thyroid Associated Orbitopathy (TAO). It is important to notice if the upper eyelids retract or there is a swelling around the eyes. It can be TED if you are a victim of hyper-thryroidism. It can also be detected if there is redness in the eyes or the eyes just bulge out large from their respective place.

Other symptoms can be a staring expression or infrequent blinking. It is mainly due to the over-production of thyroid hormones and the abnormal antibodies that attack the thyroid gland. It leads to swelling and inflammation of soft tissues around the eyes. As a result, the eyes obtrude and the lids open too widely. Dysthyroid may cause double vision also.

Dysthyroid can be detected, depending upon the degree of the symptoms found. Some of the common symptoms which you can look for are:

  • Pressure around the eyes
  • Ocular irritation
  • Tearing
  • Red eyes
  • Swelling
  • Loss of function
  • Dryness or injury to the cornea.
  • Inflammation of the eye muscles or double vision
  • Swollen muscles, which can compress the optic nerve, resulting in visual loss.

The Dysthyroid can be treated with medicated lubricants, and also with wrap-around tinted glasses and eye shields. Some of the major treatments for this eye disorder are:

  • Anti-inflammatory medication - It is administered when there is active inflammation around the eye.
  • Radiation - It is sometimes used, to treat active inflammation, along with other symptoms.
  • Surgery - It becomes necessary to decompress the orbit, caused due to enlarged swelling. Under that scenario surgery can also be recommended.
  • Orbital Surgery- It is used to improve the function and appearance of the eyes.
  • Eye-muscle surgery- It is used to reposit the enlarged muscles, which will improve double vision and misalignment of the eyes.
  • Eyelid surgery- It is done to adjust the position of retracted lids which can improve eyelid closure and its function.
