The vision in your eyes is developed with the combined function of eyes and brain. As light enters the eye, it gets changed into nerve signals and moves through the optic nerve to the brain.
When the vision in one eye is reduced due to improper collaboration of brain and eye, it leads to Amblyopia or lazy eye disorder. On the outside, your eye will seem to be normal but in reality, the brain does not support it. Children are often afflicted with Amblyopia, with 2-3 out of 100 kids complaining of vision loss in one eye.
Causes of this visual problem include any condition that has an impact on normal visual development or eye functioning. It may also be the result of unbalanced positioning of the eyes. Known as strabismus, this condition can lead to crossing or turning out of the eyes. People suffering from nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism in one eye are also prone to Amblyopia.
Early treatment of Amblyopia is essential for correcting your child’s vision. It requires the child to use the weaker eye by the following treatment procedures.
Insertion of medicine in stronger eye.
A medicine is inserted in the stronger eye once a day. By putting one drop, the child’s vision will be temporarily blurred so that he/she has to use the eye with Amblyopia. This helps the brain in developing vision completely and stimulates functions of the weaker eye.
Patching
Under this method, the stronger eye is covered with an adhesive patch for weeks or months. As the child is forced to use the weaker eye, it stimulates vision and enables the brain to develop complete vision. Your doctor can recommend the right kind of patch according to the child’s physical and psychological acceptance of the treatment.
While children can be effectively treated for Amblyopia before the age of 7 years, it is not so easy to treat older children and adults with lazy eye disorder. Treatment for such patients is still not completely successful.
