Conjunctivitis – Causes, Symptoms, Precautions and Cure

Conjunctivitis is a disease that causes inflammation of the conjunctivitis i.e. the transparent layer that covers the white part of the eyes. It is also known as pink eye as it causes the eyes to appear pinkish in color till it lasts. There can be many reasons for the occurrence of this disease like bacteria, viruses, allergies, exposure to pollutants, etc. It may also be a result of an infection caused due to wearing of contact lenses without following the appropriate instructions in this regard. Having enough knowledge about this disease can help keep it at bay as it can prove to be quite problematic and disrupt your life significantly till the time it is not treated.

Causes:

  • Conjunctivitis may be caused due to an infestation of disease causing viruses in your body.
  • A few products that can affect sensitive eyes like chemicals in beauty products can also cause conjunctivitis. Normal air pollutants may also cause this infection.
  • Some people may also suffer from specific forms of allergies that they may react to and develop conjunctivitis. This disease may also be caused due to bacteria that are usually transferred to your body in the form of an STD.

Symptoms:

  • The first and most notable symptom of this disease is the development of a pinkish film on the white part of the eyes.
  • There can be an irritation and excessive itchiness of the eyes along with a bit of soreness if you suffer from conjunctivitis.
  • You may also experience a watering of the eyes.
  • Your eyes can become much more receptive to light.
  • There may also be some kind of a secretion from the eye in some cases signifying conjunctivitis.

Precautions and Cure:

  •  If there is anyone around you that is known to be suffering from this disease, it is best to stay away for a while as it is contagious. You must not use any articles being used by an infected person on your eyes.
  • You should keep your eyes clean at all times and wash them carefully from time to time.
  • If you suspect conjunctivitis, you should call a doctor as soon as possible and ask for treatment to be prescribed.
