Complications After Cataract Surgery

by Administrator 28. June 2011 13:12

The most common symptom of cataract is cloudy or blurry vision which is sometimes helped with aids in vision such as prescription or magnifying glasses. But this can only be done in the initial stages of cataract. The main cause behind the problem, i.e. the blurring of the lens, tends to increase with time and consequently, vision decreases.
In some cases, vision can become so much affected that they face problems in doing their daily work. At this stage, they have no other option than to undergo a surgery to get rid of the cataract. It helps the people to restore vision and recover completely from cataract, while in some cases it may result in serious complications.

Complications within 24hrs of surgery

  • In very rare cases, the surgery can cause bleeding in the front or back of the eye close to the area of incision. This type of complication usually comes about very close to the eye surface and can be worked out by cauterization.
  • Bruising in the region of the eye is another rare symptom which usually arises in the cases where an injection is to be used in place of anesthetic eye drops.  Leaking can also occur around the incision if it is not properly healed. This condition can also cause infections.

Complications after one week or up to 6 months

  • De-centering or dislocating of the replaced lens is another rare but possible complication after cataract surgery. This condition requires another surgery to be corrected.
  • Endophthalmitis is a rare eye infection that can arise after the surgery. Symptoms include pain in the eye, excessive redness, loss of vision and light sensitivity.
  • Sometimes, the central part of the retina also gets swelled. This condition is known as cystoids macular edema. It can result in a mild to severe decrease or blur in vision and can be treated by the use of anti- inflammatory medicines.
  • After cataract or the secondary cataract is another general condition that may arise after cataract surgery. This condition can be treated by “yttrium-aluminum-garnet” or “YAG” laser.
