Eye Sties are ailments afflicting the eyes that consist of the formation of an external or internal protrusion that can be painful and cause much trouble on a temporary basis. It is not a very serious ailment and in some cases, it heals on its own after a few days. It usually occurs amongst children who are quite active and play outdoors on a regular basis. The causes, symptoms, precautions and cure related to this affliction have been mentioned below:
Causes:
There is a simple cause of eye sties i.e. lack of hygiene. When the area in and around the eyes is not cleaned on a regular basis and remains dirty and dusty throughout the day, a sty usually develops as a way to get rid of the accumulated dirt. As children tend to be quite careless about protecting their eyes from unhygienic substances and usually rub their eyes with dirty hands, they are the ones amongst whom this ailment is widely prevalent. Medically, it is caused due to the swelling up of a hair follicle or sweat gland around the eyes which is an indirect result of the lack of hygiene. It is a bacterial infection and is highly contagious.
Symptoms:
The common symptoms accompanying this disease are:
- Before the sty develops, there is pain around the eye area that signifies the onset of a protrusion that occurs within the next twenty four hours.
- There is a very visible protrusion that is formed. This can either be situated outside the eye on the eyelid or can also be internally located which is visible if you open up your eyes by holding it with your fingers.
- The eye becomes completely red and there is a swelling of the area around the affected eye.
- There is also a build-up of pus inside the protrusion.
Precautions:
Some of the precautions that can help prevent eye sties are:
- You must make it a point to wash your hands multiple times during the day.
- In case your eyes are exposed to unhygienic conditions or dust, you should immediately splash them with cold water in order to ensure that they are clean again.
- In case there is someone around you who has a sty, it is better to avoid that person and keep your distance until he/she is totally recovered.
Treatment:
Although most sties disappear after a few days on their own without the requirement of any kind of medical intervention, in some cases, oral medicines may need to be taken. In case these too fail to provide relied, a minor surgery may be recovered so that the pus is drained out.
