The refraction of the light is based on the cornea and retina of the eyes. Refractive errors could be caused because of the unusual shape of the cornea and the eye due to which the image in the retina appears to be blurred or distorted. There are usually three types of refractive errors that can be observed in an eye: myopia or nearsightedness, hyperopia or farsightedness and astigmatism. In Myopia, the individual has difficulty with seeing the distant objects. In hyperopia, the individual faces difficulty with seeing the near objects. In astigmatism, the image on the retina is distorted because of the irregularities in the cornea and lens of the eye. Most of the people prefer to wear glasses or contact lenses to cope up with the eye’s imperfections. However, some of them also go for Lasik surgery. Lasik surgery is one type of refractive surgery used for correcting myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. Lasik could be compared with the similar sort of surgical procedures such as PRK or Photorefractive Keratectomy.
Lasik surgery can not be performed on all the individuals. For the Lasik surgery, the patient should be at least 18 years of age and should have a sound health conditions. The Lasik surgery is done in an anesthetic eye in three steps. During the surgery, a flap of the corneal tissue is created, post which laser ray is applied which remodel the cornea underneath the flap and finally the flap is repositioned. Before the operation, the patients who wear contact lenses are advised not to wear them 6 weeks prior to the operation date.
The Lasik surgery helps to get rid of glasses, however, in some cases, the complications could develop. Some of the common complications that could develop after the surgery are dry eyes, vitamin D deficiency, light sensitivity, double vision, ghost images, Macular hole, epithelium erosion and floaters. However, in some cases, post operation, patients may develop subconjunctival hemorrhage (blot clot in the eye), debris formation under the flap and wrinkles in flap.
It is very important that before you decide for Lasik surgery, check if your eyes are really suitable for this and consult your doctor or eye surgeon at the earliest.

Eyes are an important organ in humans. With help of eyes, a person or a living being can see and interpret different objects. We are blessed to have eyes, else, we would have been in area of darkness and would have never been able to see any object on the earth. The functioning of eyes can be compared with that of a camera. However, eyes, a beautiful gift of the nature have its own functionality.
To explain how our eyes work, let us first understand various parts of eyes. The eyes consist of cornea which is a transparent outer covering and lies at the front of the eyes. The next part of the eye after the cornea is Iris. In Iris, there is a black hole called pupil through which the light rays pass through. Behind the pupil, there is a lens which passes the light through and at the back of the eye is retina (a thin tissue), where the images that we see are formed.
The process of vision starts when a light ray reflected from an object at which an individual looks, enter eyes through Iris. The light ray passes through pupil which constantly opens and closes to regulate the amount of light that can be passed through. The light rays then pass through lens which modifies itself to focus light on retina. The function of the eye is similar to a camera and the pupil can be compared with the aperture of the camera, in dark conditions, pupil widens whereas, in bright light, the pupil contracts.
If the light is not focusing correctly on the retina, it causes blurred vision. This particular condition is called a refractive error. A refractive error is an optical correction because of which the person is not able to view objects correctly. This results in short sightedness and far sightedness in the person. The refractive errors can be corrected by using spectacles, contact lenses or through surgery.

If you have a poor eyesight, your eye doctor will recommend you spectacles or contact lenses. Contact lenses are the advanced version of the already existing spectacles. People who have vision defect are usually recommended to wear spectacles since they can see the objects more clearly with its help. However, spectacles have few disadvantages and due to these reasons, contact lenses have also become a popular choice nowadays.
A contact lens can be defined as a cosmetic lens made of thin plastic discs which are usually placed directly on the cornea of the eyes. There are two types of contact lenses that are available – rigid and soft contact lenses. Rigid contact lens comes into three varieties: hard, semisoft and oxycon lenses. These lenses are categorized based on the oxygen passing through it. The passage of oxygen is low in the hard lenses and maximum in oxycon. Soft lenses, on the other hand, are made of gel like plastic and absorb water just as a sponge. Soft lenses are much more comfortable than the rigid lenses; however, soft lenses demand higher maintenance than the rigid lenses.
The contact lenses in general have many advantages over the traditional glasses. Since they are centrally placed at the cornea, they provide better visibility than the spectacles. The contact lenses are unaffected by change of temperature. These lenses are must for the active sportspersons, weavers and for the persons who use optical instruments such as cameras or microscopes. The contact lenses have become an active component for fashion. However, for people who use them, are required to pay extra attention and required to maintain these lenses in a better condition. The usage of these lenses is also not popular because of the cost involved in buying. A contact lens cost much higher than the traditional spectacles.
The contact lenses have slowly started to see great demand in the market. These lenses are available at many optical stores and can also be bought at reasonable prices. Irreversible blindness is one of the leading outcomes of Diabetes Mellitus. This disease is one of the major reasons for blindness in people who are younger than 65 years of age. Also it is a leading cause of a range of problems that can affect the eyes of the individual for example:
- It may lead to a temporary, reversible blurring of the vision or it can cause a permanent loss of eyesight.
- Diabetes Mellitus increases the danger of developing glaucoma and cataract.
Many people suffering from Diabetic Mellitus doesn’t even realize for years that they are suffering from it. They only come to know about it when they experience vision or eye related problems.
Diabetic Eye Disease is a collective name for the various eye diseases that can occur in a person due to Diabetes. The most common being:
- Diabetic Retinopathy
- Cataract
- Glaucoma
Diabetic Retinopathy: This is caused due to swelling and leakage of blood vessel on to retina. It is also caused due to growth of new blood vessel on retina. It usually affects the both eyes and you may not be able to notice any symptoms in the initial stages.
Cataract: It is a clouding that develops in the lens of the eye. If a patient has diabetes the chances of getting cataract at younger age gets high. The most common symptoms are blurred or glared vision.
Glaucoma: Glaucoma occurs when the fluid in the eyes does not drain properly and pressure builds up in the eye. The most common symptoms include headaches, eye aches and pain, watering eyes, blurred vision, loss of vision and halos around lights.
Each of the problems has a specific treatment which can include eye surgery, medications, laser treatment and eye drops administration.
